CALLBOARD

Oh Joy!  Oh Rapture!  Summer is here.  Three simple words that have been so long awaited.  It arrived just in time to revive our flagging spirits.  It always does.  The season is over, everything tucked away and there’s a month or two before things start up again.  In the meantime, theater is left to others, to the barn theaters and to summer stock and we to our mint juleps, figuratively speaking.

It’s daylight, now, from about five in the morning until nine at night. This means that after the General Meeting begins at eight and, if things move right along, you might hear the sound of corks popping at heavy dusk.  This meeting, the final one of the season, is Friday, June 13th at the tastefully subdued block building, corner of Carl and George in Valley Heights overlooking…, well, whatever you want to overlook.  So it’s the 13th at 8.

THE MEETING…

Everything is winding down, now.  Those who worked throughout the year welcome this respite and the others, who haven’t, continue to leave no imprint.

Alan Jaskiewicz will show his documentary on Camp Life at the meeting.  We’re delighted to provide Alan with fertile ground for his film projects and, in turn, to enjoy the benefits of his work.

There is a possibility that President Ron Ferrara will announce his selections of the board for the coming season but we doubt it.  It was about ten in the morning when we called and wife Mary told us, laughing, that he was still in bed.   Why wake him and ruin a perfectly beautiful day?

We don’t, as yet, have our complete next season in place.  Consequently there will be meetings throughout the summer as a kind of admonition for not getting the job done on time.  But the problems and possible selections are covered later on.

OLD BOTTLES, ODDS AND ENDS….

Most of the pertinent information about the play and the season is covered in Colleen’s Corner and Denny’s Memoirs.  But we do want to say that we were impressed by the affability and work of the cast and crew of Lend Me A Tenor and we hope to see much more of them.  Come to think of it we did see quite a bit of the women as they tried to seduce El Stupendo.

The attendance was disappointing.  There were a total of 399 at the show with only 49 on Thursday – always a slow night.  But box office receipts were $2099, concession (candy, coffee) netted $20.71 and the 50/50 raffle brought in $238.  There were expenses, of course.   Penn State billed us $785, then there were royalties, production costs and others that whittled the net down considerably.

Not part of the expenses was the Patron Appreciation Night on Friday.  There was a profusion of cookies, cakes and sandwiches, donated by the members, members like Tom L. and his now acclaimed little sandwiches.

All receipts and bills were turned over to the Treasurer.

In an unrelated matter, Treasurer Carla Ann is now finalizing her summer vacation plans.

NOTES OF THIS ‘N ‘AT…

Steve Pastrick is (was?) in St. Margaret’s hospital with a gall bladder problem.  We had a pleasant visit with him Saturday

Mary Ann Altimus as she was known then, back in those good old days – those days before, say, 1970.  She was passing through on her way to a family reunion

Shirley Shepard is also back in town.  She spends most of the year in Florida; coming north just ahead of the hurricane season, another indicator that summer is here.  Oh joy, indeed!

AND SO THE CURTAIN CLOSES…THE SUMMER BEGINS….

We repeat again the closing of last summer’s Callboard. This is a reminder that this coming meeting will be the last until our sixty third season begins in September.  Consequently, let’s give this past season a proper send off by coming to the meeting and lifting a glass as it begins its way down the long corridors of history.

         …and  now    let the

                          summer begin!
