CALLBOARD

March 2001

Richard O’Devlin

Editor, Prevaricator,

and Embellisher of this rag

There isn’t time to linger for the game’s afoot.  The set for Wait Until Dark has been moved and even now they are going at it, hammer and nail, giving it the final touches.  The play opens Thursday the 11th at Penn State, in case you’re just coming up for air.

House Manager Shawn Israel needs help with ushering and with selling stuff in the lobby.  We believe that there will be a good turnout for everyone has been getting cabin fever these past several months and now the temperature is inching into the fifties.   To get in touch with Shawn call

him at 724-994-0166.

The poster for Wait Until Dark has been sent by Denny with the request that you print out several copies and pass them around to the various shops in the valley.  Beauty shops are good prospects because women, if they are getting their hair done, certainly want others to see it.

A call went out for light board operators.  You would have to be there the nights of the play, obviously, and for some rehearsals.  Contact Katy Shields Simovoski at 724 681 0931.

And while we’re dispensing information remember that the regular monthly meeting will be Friday, March (March! What a sweet sounding word) the 19th since the play has taken over our usual slot.  Speaking of the play, Director Pam Farneth tells us:

Just say the cast is working very hard and we have a terrific show lined up. I can't wait to get the cast in front of an audience. The crew has been hard at work and I couldn't ask for better help. This is my first time directing a drama and although there have been many challenges I think we have worked very hard to come up with a very entertaining and believable show.

OLD BOTTLES, ODDS AND ENDS…

So March is upon us, finally, with the temperatures reaching up into the civilized numbers.  After that horrendous February, every welcomes March, the month when Daylight Savings Time begins (March 14) and the cherry blossoms glow in Washington D.C.

Then there’s the ides of March, the 15th, quickly followed by St. Patrick’s Day two days later.  The general meeting is the 19th and on the very next day spring begins.  Not only that but we have Palm Sunday on the 28th and Passover at sundown on the 29th before spilling into April.

And in the midst of all this there’s auditions for the next play but that is noted somewhere below.

The main focus, though, is our play.  The cast and crew have braved the hip high snows, braced themselves against the frigid weather, going out afterwards for cold beer even,  doing this several days a week for six weeks while we sat about, grumbling.

There should be a reasonably good turnout for the sun is out now and the temperature has even lightened up – or are we repeating ourselves?  So contact Shawn and make yourself available for helping in the lobby or usher, call Katy and volunteer to help run the lights, join the festivities afterwards.  There’s the play party on Friday the 12, usually at Mackenzie’s and the strike following the final performance on Sunday the 14th and in the meantime get those posters distributed.

NEWS FROM HITHER AND YON…

This from Kathy Wescoat:  “Hello to all....Prayers please for Regina Wichrowski's brother Bill who is in a Columbia, South Carolina hospital...sedated and on a ventilator...he has an abdominal staph infection and MRSA.”  Damn!!

Many don’t remember Regina, a former member, a teacher who retired and moved south some years ago, the same script that Ron Ferrara had but abandoned.  We are sorry indeed to hear of Bill’s problems.

ANOTHER OPENING ANOTHER SHOW…

Speaking of Ron Ferrara we’re reminded that he’s directing the next show, Out Of Order, a comedy by Ray Cooney, one of England’s most prolific writers.  The cast consists of six men and four women and the ages are from twenty to fifty something.  Auditions are this month, Sunday and Monday, March 21 and 22 at 7:30 PM at the workshop.  Play dates are May

13-16 at Penn state.

Tom L. Sends a note thanking the Civic theater members for their cards, calls and donations for Missy.  At meaningful times it’s good to know that the people you associate with really pull through.

This from Bill Mitas:  Hope all is well. News of my Penn State production of "Tribute", April 8th, 9th, and 10th will be starring our own Jennifer DeBlazio, as Hillary and Denior Sulava as Lou. I have a strange group of students that for the most part, only want to work back stage and tech support. Out of a group of twenty only 4 want to act and I can sometimes drag a couple of techies on the stage. (Kicking and Screaming).

But Jennifer DeBlazio?  Whee!   Who said that Billy didn’t have a sharp eye for casting?  Oh.  We see.  Denny.

Now, in order:  Wait Until Dark at Penn state runs March 11, 12, and 13 at 8 Pm and Sunday the 14th at 2.  Strike immediately follows.

The General meeting is the 19th 8 PM.  Auditions for Out Of Order are Sunday and Monday, Mar 21 and 22 at 7:30.  The Workshop.  Got it?  Got it.
